A Solar Dryer design competition for youth innovators, was unveiled, at the on-going AgritechTalks in Nakuru County.
The solar dryer design competition will run for the next two months and youth innovators aged between the ages of 18 to 25yrs, are eligible to submit their entries.
“The competition, whose main aim is to support the once lucrative pyrethrum sub-sector in Kenya, is geared towards solving farmers’post-harvest woes that continues to stifle farmers’ earnings from the crop,” said a representative from Ketagro, a Nakuru-based biotech company, the competition
Two winners will get a laptop and a further incubation of their winning design to improve them for the mass market.
The competition, will also create employment for the young innovators who come up with compelling designs.
The biotech company noted that solar driers were the best bet in handling post-harvest losses in pyrethrum value chain since it helps in retaining pyrethrin quality of flowers fetching good returns for farmers.
However, the solar drier machines that have been in use, noted Ketagro, were out of date some having been in existence for close to 40yrs.
To enter the competition, young innovators are encouraged to send an email to email@example.com and follow the registration procedures.
The entries will be scaled down to the best innovation that is affordable to local farmers, and environmentally friendly designs.
