Ovine rinderpest, also commonly known as Peste des Petits Ruminants, is a contagious disease that primarily affects sheep and goats. However, camels and some other animals fall victim to the disease too.

The county Veterinary services directorate recently concluded a three-week livestock vaccination for the unique disease. Loima and Turkana sub-counties were the primary location for this endeavor.

The exercise involved a few entities with the County Government at the helm working closely with Florida University. Additionally, the project received funding from the Feed the Future organization. Over 400,000 goats and sheep along the Kenyan-Ugandan border received the vaccination in what was described as a ’successful exercise’.

The county Director for Veterinary Services Benson Longor applauded all parties involved and shared the need to continue mobilizing resources to battle PPR.

“We will continue to support our farmers and their crops” Dr Longor said enthusiastically.
