Weather man urges farmers to prepare farms for short rains as dry week forecast
Farmers across Kenya have been urged to use the current relatively dry conditions to prepare their farms and inputs ahead of the October–December (OND) short-rains season.
The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA) says most parts of the country are expected to remain generally dry between September 8 and 14, 2026, although rainfall is likely in parts of Lamu, Kilifi, Tana River, Mombasa, Kwale, Narok and Bomet counties.
The forecast comes as farmers begin preparations for the OND season, which is an important rainfall period for agricultural production in several parts of the country.
KMSA’s seasonal outlook indicates that above-average rainfall is expected in a large number of counties during the season, with some areas also likely to experience heavy rainfall events.
Farmers are therefore encouraged to take advantage of the current dry spell to prepare their land, acquire necessary farm inputs and put other production plans in place before the rains become widespread.
The advice is particularly important for farmers who depend on rain-fed agriculture, as timely land preparation and access to inputs can help them make better use of available rainfall once the season begins.
KMSA is also cautioning communities living in flood-prone areas to remain alert as preparations for the rainy season continue. Residents are encouraged to clear drainage channels and remove obstructions that could prevent the safe movement of storm water.
The weather agency has further urged farmers and communities to continue monitoring official weather forecasts and advisories to guide their agricultural and preparedness decisions.
