Ethiopia receives 8.5m pounds aid for food from Germany

The donation is part of Germany’s flexible funding for the region and  will boost the WFP  activities from 2021 to 2023 where it aims to save lives and livelihoods of communities affected by conflict and climate change.
The donation is part of WFP’s contribution to Tigray emergency response targeting 2.1 million people, urgently in need of food and nutrition assistance. A total of 5.2 million people, or 91 per cent of Tigray’s entire population  has been affected by the raging war and need emergency food assistance.

‘Kenya and Ethiopia’s representative to the WFP Dr Steven Were Omamo welcomed the  donation which  will also  support  the body’s refugee response in the country,  and offer life-saving emergency food assistance to communities in Ethiopia’s Somali region affected by extreme climate shocks.

“WFP welcomes this timely and generous contribution from the people of Germany to enable us to respond to the most urgent humanitarian needs across the country,”  Dr Omamo said.

“WFP is immensely proud of its long-standing partnership with the Federal Republic of Germany. We are grateful for its commitment to working with us to improve food security and help vulnerable people in Ethiopia to get the food they need to survive and become food secure,” he added.

On his part, the German Ambassador to Ethiopia Stephan Auer who visited WFP’s warehouse and offices in Adama last week, said the WFP’s work is of the utmost importance, now more than ever.

“WFP’s work is of the utmost importance – now more than ever. Germany is proud to support WFP in Ethiopia and beyond, being the organisation’s second largest donor worldwide,” said the German ambassador during the  dispatched of food from Adama to the surrounding communities. .

Germany’s donation comes at a critical time whenWFP is facing a funding shortfall. WFP currently requires US$203 million to maintain operations in Tigray Region until the end of the year. An additional US$97 million is needed to cover relief food operations in the Somali region during the next six months.
