A farmer walked away with Ksh700,000 after selling a 720-kilogram Boran bull to President William Ruto during the live auction at the Nairobi International Trade Fair today.

The bull, which was last year’s spring champion at the Agriculture Livestock Show, was the highlight of the livestock auction ring.

Unlike typical auctions that feature a flurry of bids, this one was brief. President Ruto made the opening bid — and with no rival offers forthcoming — the gavel quickly came down, making him both the first and last bidder.

A Farmer’s Windfall

For the farmer, the sale represents both a financial windfall and validation of quality breeding. Earning Ksh 700,000 from a single bull provides proof that investments in proper animal husbandry and genetics can yield significant returns.

It also positions the farmer’s herd for greater recognition, especially with the added prestige of a presidential purchase.

Nairobi International Trade Fair Spotlight

The Nairobi International Trade Fair, held annually at the Jamhuri Grounds, serves as one of the largest platforms for showcasing Kenya’s agricultural innovations, technologies, and best practices.

The livestock auctions are traditionally a major highlight, with champion animals often fetching impressive prices.

This year’s sale of the Boran bull to President Ruto adds another chapter to the fair’s history, reinforcing its role as a marketplace for excellence and a stage where agriculture and leadership visibly intersect.
