Kenya is gearing up to host the 12th International Floriculture Trade Expo (IFTEX) from June 3–5, 2025, at the Visa Oshwal Centre in Parklands, Nairobi. Widely regarded as Africa’s premier flower trade event, IFTEX 2025 will bring together breeders, growers, buyers and other key players in the global floriculture value chain.

Over the past 12 years, IFTEX has grown into a must-attend gathering for the international flower community. Dick van Raamsdonk, IFTEX founder and President of HPP Exhibitions, notes: “IFTEX keeps getting larger and better. This year, we expect a 20 per cent increase in attendance, with many new producers joining us.”

Kenya’s floral powerhouse

Kenya consistently ranks among the world’s top five exporters of fresh-cut flowers, sending 88 per cent of its blooms to the European Union — of which 47 per cent go to the Netherlands. In 2024, horticulture earnings topped Ksh136 billion, with flowers accounting for more than half of that total, according to Christine Chesaro, director of the Horticultural Crops Directorate.

“Companies are responding to market demand by offering an ever-wider range of varieties,” said Dr Isaac Macharia of KEPHIS during a press briefing in May.

Despite challenges such as climate change, pests, and freight constraints, Kenya’s floriculture industry has demonstrated remarkable resilience in:

  • Climate-Smart Farming: Efforts to reduce water use and adopt renewable energy on farms.
  • Digital Traceability: Roll-out of e-Phyto systems and online inspections to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Global Standards: Adoption of GLOBALG.A.P., KS1758 and the FOSS Sustainability Standard to meet export requirements.

“Sustainability will be a central theme at IFTEX 2025,” highlighted Catherine Mukoko, COO of the Kenya Flower Council. “It’s a timely platform to showcase new investments, innovations and strategic partnerships.”

IFTEX 2025 isn’t just a trade fair, it’s a vibrant celebration of colour, culture and commerce. With over 500,000 direct jobs in Kenya’s flower sector and support for some 4 million livelihoods, the expo will shine a spotlight on the people and communities behind the blooms.

Whether you’re a grower seeking new markets, a breeder unveiling the latest varieties, or a buyer hunting for premium blooms, IFTEX 2025 promises three days of networking, discovery and inspiration—right here in Nairobi.
