Drought confirmed as national disaster

On the 8th of September 2021, President Kenyatta declared ongoing drought a national disaster.

His excellency president Uhuru Kenyatta declared that the drought affecting parts of the country was indeed a national disaster.

Resultantly, the president instructed the National treasury, the Ministry of Interior and National Government to take immediate action. By spearheading government efforts to aid affected households, these efforts ranging from water and relief provision and additionally, livestock uptake.

This decision came after a meeting between the Head of State and 85 leaders from Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL). In addition, the meeting was led by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani.
