The Agriculture Department of Makueni County Government is aiming at promoting chilli farming among local growers in a move to champion agribusiness as a driver for economic growth of the devolved unit.

According to Ms. Joyce Mutua, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM), the devolved government is spotlighting chilli farming as a game-changing opportunity for local farmers in Makueni County.

She said this during a visit to Mwisa village in Kathozweni Ward on Tuesday, where she commended Robert Kiamba, one of the local chilli farmers, for turning his four-acre farm into a thriving chilli business.

The enterprising farmer harvests up to 4.8 tonnes of red and green chillies each week, earning Ksh250 per kilogram translating to about Ksh1,200,000 gross income per week.

During the visit, Mutua applauded the dedication and innovative farming techniques of Kiamba saying: “Farming today is more than tradition—it’s a business with the power to uplift communities. Farmers must embrace market diversification locally and globally,” said the CECM.

Kiamba’s success story has become a source of inspiration for fellow farmers in the area and the region.

With the County Government’s support of agricultural extension services, chilli farming is becoming an impressive and promising venture for the farmers offering high returns.
